Roy Orbison, born as Roy Kelton Orbison was born in 1936 and died in 1988 aged just 52. Mr Orbison was known for being an American singer songwriter. His dark, emotional ballads as well as the complexity of his songs were what made him famous. Roy had the nickname the 'Caruso of Rock', and was also known as the 'Big O'. Many of his songs displayed significant vulnerability. This was in stark contrast to the masculine songs that the 1950's and 1960's were famous for. Mr Orbison's voice had a wide range, he was able to sing as a baritone as well as a tenor. When he performed, he was famous for wearing black and dark clothes, with identically coloured hair and sunglasses. He was also famous for standing particularly still during performances. All these elements added to Mr Orbison' mysterious attitude that he wished to display to his fans and be known for. It was in Texas that Roy was born, and first discovered country music and rock music in his high school years. He was signed in 1956 to Sun Records, but it was 4 years later that his real success came following a signing with Monument Records. In 6 years, 1960 - 1966, no less than 22 of Roy's singles made it into the top 40. He either wrote or co-wrote all of the singles that reached the top 10. He was particularly famous for 'Running Scared' in 1961, 'Crying' in 1961, 'In dreams', 1963 and 'Oh, Pretty Woman', in 1964. In 1988, Roy co-founded a new band called 'Traveling Wilburys', which was a rock supergroup with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Pretty and Jeff Lynne. Unfortunately, it was later that year that Roy died following a heart attack and never really managed to get his new venture off the ground.
